Some want Albert Pike site open for overnight use.

by THV 11 on August 28th, 2014

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (AP) – A rally is planned for this weekend in support of reopening the Albert Pike campground for overnight use.

Overnight camping has been prohibited at the south Arkansas campground since 2010, when 20 people died in powerful flash flood after the Little Missouri River rose more than 20 feet in less than four hours.

The site is now open during daylight hours but not for overnight camping. It’s owned by the U.S. Forest Service.

The Daily Siftings Herald reports a rally has been scheduled for Saturday morning at the campground in Montgomery County. Supporters say the campground has fallen into disrepair and that expanding its use will draw more visitors to the site.

The U.S. Forest Service didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment Thursday.

At least 16 campers killed in Arkansas flash flood

At least 16 people, including some children, were killed Friday after flash floods swept through their remote Arkansas campsites following a heavy rain, according to Gov. Mike Beebe.

About 60 campers were rescued by emergency workers, another two dozen hospitalized, the Associated Press reported, citing authorities. Dozens more are still missing and feared dead.

“About one-thirty, two in the morning, we started hearing children and women screaming and crying,” said Crystel Hofer, who was asleep in her cabin when the water came raging through. “So we went to the door and opened the door and they were trying to come up the hill to where our cabin was to escape the rising water.”

It is possible to put safety measures into place that would warn campers well in advance of any flooding. As well, a community center type building can be built well uphill to shelter evacuees from the campsites.

As I understand it, there is a series of lawsuits filed that will prevent it from opening

It still makes chills run down my spine, I knew 5 of the people that lost their lives there very well. I have mixed feelings about the park being re-opened for over nite use or any use.

It is not reopening. At least not yet. The U.S. Forest Service has refused to even maintain the park at this point so as not to "encourage camping". That is why there is a rally Saturday. The public is trying to get the USFS to realize that we want our campground opened back up for overnight camping.

We took my sisters up there August 17th and we were shocked at how they had let it go. It was terrible what happened there but terrible thing happen in life on our highway and air ways, look at what happened on 9-11. I don't think that they should just let it go to waste it is a beautiful place that God has created. Look how many people die mountain climbing but people keep climbing them. People have to make their own decisions, I probably wouldn't spend the night there or even the day if we had a lot of… Read more »

Wish they would reopen We camped there every year We were there 2 days before the flood. I wonder all the time why we lost this beautiful place. There are place all across our nation that acts of nature cause death but they don't close them off to the public. I am truly sorry for the families that lost love ones there but also sorry that our children's children want get to grow up going there and meeting people from all over and making new friends every year… Lots of memories made at that camp site.
