Oak Grove High School

Oak Grove High School

City/Town:
Location Class:
Built: 1960's | Abandoned: 2011
Status: Restored (2013)
Photojournalist: Michael Schwarz

Oak Grove High School was a public secondary school located in North Little Rock, Arkansas and served grades 9 through 12. Oak Grove High School was administered by the Pulaski County Special School District. Since 1967, Oak Grove had been accredited by the North Central Association (NCA) Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (CASI). Oak Grove’s official colors were green and white and the school’s mascot was a hornet.

The 2010-2011 school year was the last year for Oak Grove to operate. The school mascot was transferred to the new Maumelle High School which was built a few miles away in Maumelle, AR. The name “Oak Grove” and the school’s colors did not transfer. The 2011-2012 school year was the first year in which Maumelle had its own high school.

Since its closure, the campus has been frequently vandalized and broken into. Several incidents of thieves ripping out copper wiring from various A/C units and breaking into the shop building to steal copper wiring within have been reported. The incidents have forced school administrators to remove all the school’s A/C units. Currently the other schools use this parking lot to store school buses when they are not in use.

Athletics

The Oak Grove Hornets competed in several interscholastic athletic activities including: soccer, football, baseball, softball, basketball (boys and girls), track & field, wrestling, volleyball (girls), golf, and cheerleading. The Hornets last competed in the 7-4A conference with Pulaski Robinson, Pulaski Academy, DeQueen, Malvern, Nashville, Bauxite, and Ashdown High Schools.

Notable Alumni

  • Darren McFadden (2005); two-time All-American running back
  • Doak Walker Award (2006, 2007)

Oak Grove Life Center Moves In!

When we visited this old school there were no plans of renovation. Fortunately, a couple months later in June, 2013 ThatChurh.com purchased the property, and renamed it Oak Grove Life Center. They have big plans! They are currently cleaning it up and they would love your help. Go to there website (www.oakgrovelifecenter.com) to learn about how you can help turn this old school into a place for change! You can help by donation or helping to clean up the facility! Click the box below to learn more!

[learn_more caption=”Learn More about Oak Grove Life Center” state=”close”] “Oak Grove Life Center exists to bring about positive change through intentional relationship building for the cause of Christ. We will focus, but not limit, our attention on children with little to no resources, special needs, deployed parents, and those in the foster care system. Basically, children who might not have the opportunity to be a part of costly programs. Our vision for the OGLC is to become a place for summer camps, after school care, and a multitude of other things. We want to be a hub for positive change for the community of Oak Grove and beyond. There’s several other things in the process like a MEMS and Police substation, Upward Sports programs and things of the like. Really, the possibilities are endless.

Interns will be the backbone of the OGLC. We will have opportunities for interns (age 18-25) year round, or simply for the summer, to be camp counselors, workers at our water park “LIFE Water” or managers of our rope/zip line courses…and the list goes on! Our goal is to train the next generation of leaders through hands on, practical experience. We intend to provide our interns with a live-in dorm like facility on campus for the duration of their internship. They will receive the highest level of leadership development as they will be working directly with kids everyday.Taylor Grisham (OGLC Contact Manager)

We believe that God had this very thing in mind for this campus long before Oak Grove High School ever opened their doors to the first set of students. It’s time that we get to work in making it just that.

I graduated from OGHS in ’79. The school actually served 7th-12th grades, not 9th-12th. Can you believe we actually had a smoking hole? It was a small courtyard situated between the office and gym, and right behind the cafeteria. It really was a sweet little campus.

It’s such a relief. They did actually survey and found he would win “hands-down” in Australia.I really do hope he can follow through on the (most of) the rhetoric.McCain was v.gracious.Expectations are very high for him, so there is bound to be some disappointment. We need to keep intentions in mind, as well.I got so teary…. LOL

he's OK, etc". Now that there is an actual ongoing criminal investigation regarding Barry's BC will members of Congress still send out letters defending Obama's eligibility based on his BC??Everybody…please Call your Representative, Senators, John Boehner, anyone in Congress and ask for a written reply on Obama's eligibility.Make them make up a brand new BS reply and then post it here!!

Hey, did you happen to see a commemoration plaque while you were there? I work for Arkansas Historic Preservation Program and a couple of us are working on a survey of Mid-Century Modern buildings. Commemoration plaques are generally the easiest why to get the architect and year built. I appreciate any help you can give me.

I got a little emotional looking at oak groves photos. You see, I and my brothers and sisters all went to Robinson , graduating classes 1980 1982 1983 1984 and 1987. We all were football, basketball players and cheerleaders. Oak Grove was our rival as long as I can remember. So sad to see it gone (abandoned) Thank you for all your pics! I love your sight!

I graduated in '78 and boy oh boy do I remember the rival we had with Joe T! The week of the game (usually in October) all the bantering back and forth. So much fun and tons of memories!
